Lose Belly Fat–why You Can’t Spot Reduce

For those of you looking to lose belly fat, it’s important that you have the right information in order to achieve your goals. If you’ve been doing countless sets of crunches, leg raises, or any other direct abdominal work in attempt to lose that spare tire, then you have the wrong information.

In this article, I am going to show you why it’s impossible to lose belly fat no matter how many crunches or leg raises you do, and I’m going to reveal the right way to go about it.

It’s really quite elementary, or so it would seem. If you want to lose belly fat, then you obviously have to work your abdominals. That’s what you’ve been told, so you go and hit the abs from all angles.

You do crunches for the upper abs, hanging leg raises for the lower abs, side crunches for the obliques. That should help you lose belly fat, right?

Wrong!

You’ll never lose belly fat by doing all of that abs work. Sure, you’re going to have strong abdominal muscles. You might even have a six pack, but you’re never going to see it until you lose that roll of fat covering them up.

The reason that you will never lose belly fat that way is that you just can’t spot reduce. By spot reduction, I mean that you’re only losing fat in one area of the body.

It is therefore impossible to lose belly fat, and then not lose fat throughout the rest of your body.

In order to lose belly fat, you have to have a total fat loss plan. Fat won’t just disappear from your abdominal region simply because you’re doing every imaginable abs exercise. That’s not the way it works.

Fat loss occurs in the body as a whole. That means that if you want to lose belly fat, you have to have a fat loss strategy that burns fat throughout your body.

To lose belly fat, you have to change your workout focus away from direct ab work, and instead start doing the types of exercises that really burn fat. That’s heavy, compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, presses and rows. These exercises work most of the muscles of the body, along with their stabilizers. This, in turn, helps to release the hormones responsible for muscle gain, and fat loss. You can’t get that from crunches, or leg raises, and definitely not from side bends.

You also have to do cardio, but not in the way you’ve been taught. To lose belly fat, you have to do high intensity cardio. That low intensity stuff won’t produce a hormonal response the way high intensity, interval cardio does.

Simply put, high intensity cardio releases fat burning hormones, and revs up the metabolism in a way that slow, steady state, and long duration cardio never will.

Aside from heavy compound exercises and high intensity cardio, if you’re serious about losing belly fat you must also eat a healthy and well balanced diet to really lose that belly fat.

By healthy and well balanced I mean a diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean meats such as chicken and fish, nuts (unsalted), and whole grains. Notice I didn’t mention anywhere that you must starve yourself. That’s not the way to lose belly fat, and it’s definitely not the way fat loss works.

If you starve yourself, or deprive your body of any of the macronutrients (i.e. proteins, fats, carbohydrates), you won’t lose belly fat. Instead, you’ll end up messing with your metabolism. Essentially, you’ll end up slowing down your metabolism and stopping your fat loss before it even starts.

So, to really lose belly fat, you can’t try to spot reduce it away. Spot reduction does not work. Instead, you must focus on fat loss in the body as a whole. You have to include compound exercises, and high intensity cardio. And, you absolutely must include a healthy and balanced diet.

Workout Exercises to Flatten Abs, Achieve Core Fitness and Reduce Lower Back Pain

Why should you care about muscles you can’t even see? The answer is, among other reasons, to flatten abs, eliminate back pain – particularly lower back pain – and achieve core fitness.

By now you are probably familiar with “core training” or you have at least heard the term used on TV or in various fitness publications. Your “core” refers not just to the abdominals, but your entire trunk musculature, including those deep muscles you can’t even see (like the Transversus Abdominis, or TVA).

Back pain is one of the biggest complaints of men of ALL ages, and many women suffer from it as well, especially during and after pregnancy. You see a weak core, combined with other problems such as tightness in certain muscle groups, lousy form and poor selection of exercises is one of the leading causes of lower back pain. The good news is that it’s largely preventable with a few easy exercises.

There’s more. Your core is also the seat of power for your entire body. If you’re an athlete – recreational or competitive – core strength means better performance on the playing field. If you’re a non-athlete, greater core strength means more efficient and safer performance of regular day to day activities. If you know anyone who blew out their back lifting boxes or simply doing work around the house you know what I’m talking about.

About 15 years ago, I was diagnosed with a herniated disk, and at one point a neurosurgeon told me I should be on the lookout for “foot flop”. This is when the nerves in the leg go numb to the point where the foot literally drags on the ground and, he explained, that surgery was imminent and unavoidable. I was fairly freaked out. An alternative therapy was an epidural injection of steroids which, after just one treatment, did provide relief.

I knew that a lifestyle change was in order and fortunately, I was able to rehab my own back without ever going under the knife, thanks to a ton of flexibility work and some intelligent abdominal training. Once you rupture a disk you can rehab to a remarkable degree, but it’s something you always have to be cautious about.

Anyway, in the last few years since I started to use core training methods, and not just the traditional “bodybuilding-style” routines, I’ve seen a greater improvement in my lower low back than ever before. If you haven’t started doing any ball work or core training yourself, I would definitely urge you to look into it.

The reason I’m mentioning core training today is because of the availability of home core fitness programs that do not have to break the bank. In fact there are unique programs available that do not focus on traditional advise such as killing yourself with mind numbing sit ups and crunches.

Looks for programs that offer levels to progress through, as not all of us are ready for the more advanced core training techniques. Level progression from beginner up to “athlete” is ideal. Note that some of the exercises are a lot more challenging than they look in the pictures. You have to try them to appreciate them. Many of them can be done with just your body weight. Others require a stability ball (swiss ball), and a handful can be done with a cable apparatus you’d find in any gym.

So get started on a program that creates core fitness through a workout program that will flatten your abs and reduce lower back pain.

How To Reduce Abdominal Fat

Some women tend to gain fat in the abdominal area, even if they are not heavy anywhere else. You may have a great body every where else such as having beautiful legs, but even having a great pair of legs does absolutely nothing to keep the focus off of your unattractive stomach. In most cases however, these people do not actually have the time to head on over to the gym to get a workout, especially during the day when they have to go to work.

There is a way however to help you lose abdomen fat with a few easy exercises, which can be used everyday, anywhere that will help you get the flat stomach you want. By taking these ideas and using them, you will be able to rid yourself of belly fat as soon as possible.

Ways to Reduce Abdominal Fat

1. Suck your Stomach In!
One of the easiest things to do for someone trying to loose abdominal fat is to start of with abdominal crunches which is the best way for you to lose belly fat. You will also find that whenever you are walking up or down your stairs, or if you are simply getting into your car, that you should think of that as an abdominal exercise. During those times you simply can tighten up your abdominal muscles and make them work as much as possible which will allow you to lose the belly fat.

A suggestion would be to breath deeply to increase the effectiveness of this action. You can tighten your stomach even more when you add the deep breathing action. The good thing about this is that you are able to do this anywhere, and it also offers the benefit of keeping you from experiencing the pain you may get from crunches or many of the fat burning exercises.

2. Exercising using Front and Back, Side to Side Motions
When you are trying to lose weight you are able to reduce the fat on your abdomen by using the front and back motion. When you get about to get in and out of your car, you can simply lean your seat all the way back, then cross your arms and do crunches, repeat this about 8 to 12 times.

You may also try the side to side procedure where you place your hands on each of your hips and lean your body from side to side in repetitions of 8 to 12. If you are not feeling a burn after 8 repetitions, you many not be performing the exercise properly or you may need to add some resistance such as weights to the exercise.
One thing to remember is that you will not lose abdominal fat if you simply do these exercises. These exercises are meant to tone up your body; however fat deposits are usually on the top of the muscle, so in order to get rid of fat you will need to change your diet.

Roughly 80% of the total fat you have in your abdomen has the ability to be controlled by diet, and to be reduced by exercise.
